When January rolled around, I decided to make one small change to my evening routine—I started reading before bed.
Now, before you say, “You’re an author. Of course you read before bed!” let me explain. Like many people, I had fallen into the habit of checking my phone one last time before turning out the light. I finally decided it was time for a change, so I swapped the screen for a book.
It has become one of my favorite parts of the day.
There’s something wonderfully comforting about climbing into bed, fluffing my pillows, having Connie get cozy next to me, opening a good book, and letting myself disappear into another world for a little while. Whether I’’m visiting a charming small town, following clues alongside an amateur sleuth, or getting to know unforgettable characters, those quiet moments help me end the day on a peaceful note.
Here are five reasons reading before bed has become a habit I look forward to every evening.
- It Helps Me Unwind
After a busy day filled with writing, errands, and everything else life throws my way, reading gives my mind permission to slow down. Instead of replaying my to-do list, I can focus on the story in front of me and simply relax.
- It’s Much Better Than Scrolling
We’ve all done it—you pick up your phone to check one thing, and suddenly twenty minutes have disappeared.
Reading feels completely different. Rather than bouncing from one post to another, I get lost in a single story, and I always feel more relaxed when I close my book than when I put down my phone.
- It Offers the Perfect Escape
One of the things I love most about books is how easily they transport us. No matter what kind of day I’ve had, a good story lets me step into another world for a little while. It’s a wonderful way to leave everyday stress behind before falling asleep.
- It’s Something I Look Forward To
Even on the busiest days, I know I’ll have a few quiet minutes with my book before bed. That simple ritual has become a little gift I give myself each evening, and I genuinely look forward to it all day.
- It Ends My Day on a Cozy Note
There’s something comforting about closing a book after reading a chapter or two, turning off the light, and drifting off to sleep with a story still fresh in my mind. It feels like the perfect way to end the day.
Bonus Tip: You’ll Read More Than You Think
One unexpected benefit I’ve discovered is how quickly those nightly reading sessions add up. Even if you only read for fifteen or twenty minutes each evening, you’ll make steady progress through your to-be-read pile. Before long, you’ll be finishing books without ever feeling like you had to squeeze reading into your schedule.
Since adding this simple habit to my routine, my evenings have become a little calmer, a little cozier, and a lot more enjoyable. It’s amazing how one small change can make such a big difference.
Now I’d love to hear from you! Do you read before bed, or do you prefer another time of day? And what book is currently keeping you company on your nightstand? Right now, I’m reading the ARC of Bubble, Bubble, Tea and Trouble by Vicki Delaney.
