Author Q & A – Ellie Ashe

Hello! Today I’m so excited to have mystery author Ellie Ashe here to answer a few questions about her writing process, her books, and what she does when she’s not at the keyboard. I hope you enjoy this Author Q&A.

Hi and thanks for having me! I’m so happy to introduce my latest release, A Novel Death! It’s a new series for me, set in the fictional town of Danger Cove—a small coastal town that is no stranger to mystery and murder. I’m thrilled to be a part of the Danger Cove series and the amazing authors who have created such a fun series.

A Novel Death is the first in the Danger Cove Bookshop Mystery series. Here’s the blurb:

When Meri Sinclair inherited Dangerous Reads, she inherited a legacy. It’s Danger Cove’s only bookstore, and her grandmother had made sure that it was a warm and friendly places for readers of all ages.

To get off on the right foot, Meri invites celebrity author Cal Montague, a Danger Cove native who grew up to become a solid B-list actor, to debut his tell-all memoirs, Tales I Shouldn’t Tell. Turns out someone else thought Cal shouldn’t be telling tales, too. Before the event can even start, Meri finds the guest of honor in the alley—shot dead.

With motive and opportunity, the police have Meri in their sights. To save her business and her own skin, Meri, sets out to help the Danger Cove police find the real killer—before the murderer returns for a sequel.

Tell us about your main character.

Meri Sinclair grew up in Danger Cove, but has lived in Seattle for the last decade. But after an ugly break-up that was far too public, she’s retreated to her hometown. She’s just inherited her grandmother’s bookstore and is basically starting over. Being suspected of murder is not the homecoming she was expecting!

How many books have you written? What are you writing now?

I’ve written three novels and two short stories in the Miranda Vaughn Mysteries series. I have also written a fun, light romantic suspense novel, A Good Kind of Trouble, the first book in the Trouble in Twin Rivers series (which I will get back to…eventually). And now I have the new Danger Cove series.

Currently, I’m working on book 4 in the Miranda Vaughn series, and I expect that it will be out in early 2017.

Do you listen to music when you write?

I like to listen to either background noise, like the sound of coffee shops or rain, or movie soundtracks. For background sounds, I go to either asoftmurmer.com or coffivity.com. I’ve also been using brain.fm, which has been interesting. It’s supposed to provide sounds that help you focus.

I’ve also recently discovered that video game soundtracks are good for writing. They’re designed to keep you focused and in flow while playing—a great state of mind for writing, too.

Do you write on a typewriter, computer, dictate or longhand?I write in Scrivener, which is the best writing program that I’ve found. Recently, I’ve also started using dictation software, but it’s so new yet, I’m not sure if it’s going to help me or not. I like it, but it does require a ton of editing later.

What advice would you give to aspiring writers?

I know everyone says to finish your works in progress, and I both agree and disagree with that. I disagree because I have numerous half-finished manuscripts on my hard drives that I’ve abandoned. But I don’t regret moving on before they were done. In every case, I learned something important while writing them—and sometimes that lesson was that this story could not be saved.

But I also recommend that you do finish a manuscript because the first time you do, it’s absolutely the best feeling ever! And you will want to do it again. And again. Once you get a taste of that, you’re going to get addicted.

What do you do when you’re not writing?

I love to cook and bake and try out new recipes on unsuspecting friends and family. Most are good! I love photography, reading (of course), knitting, sewing, and gardening.

What is your favorite motivational phrase.

“Sentiment without action is the ruin of the soul.” —Edward Abbey

Thanks for hosting me! It’s been fun!

Author bio

USA Today best-selling author Ellie Ashe has always been drawn to jobs where she can tell stories—journalist, lawyer, and now writer. Writing fun romantic mysteries is how she gets the “happily ever after” that so often is lacking in her day job.

When not writing, you can find her with her nose in a good book, watching far too much TV, or trying out new recipes on unsuspecting friends and family. She lives in Northern California with her husband and three cats, all of whom worry when she starts browsing the puppy listings on petfinder.com.

When Edits Meet Life

Hello! I’ve been MIA because I’ve been deep in edits. When edits meet life it makes for an interesting adventure. In the past my edits have always been for myself. I’ve written a draft, printed it and revised and tightened. This was done on my schedule, no real deadline. In other words, I could edit at a leisurely pace. No pressure. Ahh, the good old days.

This is my beast of a manuscript.

July2016Edits2 002

So, what was the difference this time? I have an agent and she read my manuscript and had some feedback for me. When the manuscript landed back in my inbox I dove right into the edits. While she didn’t give me a deadline for turning the manuscript back into her (bless her), I knew that there was a clock ticking. Without the edits completed, my submission to editors was on hold. Tick. Tick. Tick. As I worked through the edits I found myself deeper and deeper in the writer’s cave and everything else seemed to fade away. I found myself for nearly 5 weeks living, eating, and breathing those edits. There have been some hot, miserable days recently where my motivation was a big fat zero for most things. But not my edits. You see, the light at the end of this tunnel was the submitting to editors and that light (I admit, sometimes the light was a little dim. LOL) kept me moving forward.

On Sunday afternoon I finished my edits. WooHoo!!!! I was so excited. But, I didn’t get carried away with my celebration because I’m really not done yet. I decided to let my manuscript sit for a week and then I’m going to do one last proofread of it before it goes back to my agent.

Publishing is a long process. And it’s a process that I am enjoying. Heck, the alternative is to give up and never know what could have been. Onward to proofreading!

Pets, Shih-Tzu Saturday

Shih-Tzu Saturday #8

Happy Saturday! How hot is it where you are? My critique partner, Ellie Ashe, who lives in northern California is baking as I write this. Over 100 degrees. Ugh. Here in Connecticut the temps are climbing today to the mid-80s with low humidity. So it’s tolerable. I’m really not a summer gal. I prefer cooler weather (without the snow preferably). But today’s post isn’t about the weather, it’s about a Shih-Tzu named Billy, aka Cone Dog.

BillyInCone2016

Billy experienced something we humans dread. You go to the doctor for one thing and you end up leaving worse than you did when you arrived for the appointment. Last Sunday I took him for his annual exam. Simple, right? No so much. He had a skin irritation, something to do with allergies. Then the big whopper and the reason why he’s been wearing a cone since the appointment. He has an ulcer in his eye. We left the appointment with five medications for both conditions and then I picked up the cone for him. Aside from his medications (three times a day), the most important thing I had to do was protect his right eye so that the ulcer does not worsen. On his re-check mid-week the ulcer was healing nicely and tomorrow he has another appointment scheduled. If all goes well, he’ll be out of the cone tomorrow. Fingers crossed!

The little guy has been a good sport considering the wearing of the cone and the three medications I’m putting in his eyes three times a day. I know that’s not pleasant. But he’s still wagging his tail. I’ll have to keep this week in mind the next time I come across a difficult situation. I’ll just remind myself to keep wagging my tail. 🙂

Have a great Saturday!

Friday Faves

Friday Faves

Happy Friday! I hope you’ve had a great week. Did your week fly by like mine did? Between the day job, the exceptionally lovely weather which means I can get the pups out more for walks and playtime, and revising the over 10,000 words I wrote over the Memorial Day weekend, the days just flew by. I did have time to do some reading and I was able to squeeze in some knitting time along with doing a little work on my counted-cross stitch sampler. I also found some great blogs and I’m going to share a few with you today.

FridayFavesSummer2

Alina from The Gift of Knitting shared her thoughts on creativity. She posed the question of where does your creativity come from and the responses were very interesting. Her post had me thinking about where my creativity comes from and after giving it some thought the answer and the answer I came up with is that it is always present. There are times when it is quiet and other times it’s bursting at the seams so much so that I can barely contain it. Luckily that occurred when I sat down to write the outline of the second book in my mystery series. Check out the post, I think you’ll find it interesting.

With all of this lovely weather, a girl can’t help but thinking about having a picnic and over at Epicurious there’s a great post on packing the ultimate Parisian Picnic.

The countdown to Father’s Day is on. If you haven’t done your shopping you may want to check out 10 Last Minute Father’s Day Gifts from Organizing Made Fun for ideas and inspiration. There’s no time to dawdle.

Looking for a little movie history? The house from the 1991 remake of The Father of the Bride staring Steve Martin is for sale. It’s move in ready and I’m so ready to start packing.

Every 7 weeks I take Susie and Billy for a grooming appointment so you know I just had to read this article, 12 Things I Wish I Knew Before I Became a Dog Groomer. Lets just say, I’m super jealous of the dog bath that the groomer does. Talk about lucky dogs!

I hope you have a great Friday, after all it’s the best day of the week, right?

Knitting, Reads, Yarn Along

Yarn Along

I’m so excited to be participating in my first Yarn Along. I’m looking forward to seeing what the other gals are knitting and reading. For my first Yarn Along post I’m sharing a new project and my current read.

For my project it’s take two. I began this baby blanket (it’s going to be a gift) last week and after a rocky start (it was labeled a beginner pattern, in truth it really should have been labeled intermediate/beginner knitter and luckily I have a friend who is a very experienced knitter to help me) it started to look like a blanket!!! I was loving every stitch…until…I realized there was a dropped stitch after finding a funky end stitch on a row, both of realizations came after the fact. Not being experienced enough to salvage the drop stitch and I had no idea how to deal with that funky, loopy stitch, I decided to pull out all of the stitches until  got to the dropped stitch. My thought was I would pick up that drop stitch and go forth. Knit on!

Well…

The blanket just fell apart, the stitches were coming undone and …it was a real mess.

I made the decision to pull out all of the stitches and start from the beginning.

That’s when it became a disaster.

Two yarns being pulled out led to a heap of knotted, tangled yarn. Yeah, that was fun.

Eventually I untangle, unknotted both yarns and I started all over again.

It’s finally starting to look like a blanket.

Now onto my current read.  This is the third book I’ve read in the series so far and I’m really enjoying the series. Jenn McKinlay has written a smart, cozy series with characters that engaging and the plots are well-crafted.

One more photo. While I was taking photos of the blanket and the book Susie joined me and saw the camera. So, she wasn’t going to be left out of the action. She posed and waited patiently for her close-up. Guess she wanted to show off her pigtails. She and Billy had just returned from the grooming appointment.

This has been fun sharing my project and current read. I’m looking forward to checking out the other Yarn Along posts. Have a great Wednesday!
