Friday Faves – Halloween Edition

Happy Friday!

We’re getting closer to Halloween. Can you believe it? Actually, it’s a little hard for me to believe because this past week we hit 80 degrees a couple of days. Boo! I want cool, crisp October air. 🙂

Even with the slightly warmer temps, now’s a good time to start thinking about some Halloween recipes and crafts.

How about a Halloween Yarn Garland from Camille at Growing Up Gabel? The garland looks so cute and kids will love it.

To keep your crafty self busy these DIY Jack Skellington Multi-Holiday mugs are the perfect touch for snuggling up with a cup of hot cocoa. Sarah from Bombshell Bling shows you how to make a scary mug.

How about a snack on Halloween? Easy Oreo Pumpkin Pops could be the perfect treat for your little ghosts and goblins. Erin from Suburban Simplicity shares the very easy recipe.

Not looking for a snack? Then how about a drink? The Pumpkinhead Horror Movie Drink looks frightfully delicious. Liz and Chanelle from Eat Move Make share the recipe for a killer non-alcohol cocktail.

Friday Faves – Autumn Edition

Happy Friday!

It’s a pumpkin spice kind of day. The temps are a little cooler than they were last week (yay!) and the squirrels are very busy outside, I hear them scurrying through the fallen leaves. I’m ready to pull on my boots, slip into a cardigan and cozy up with a cup of soup.

Truth be told, I’ve been ready for a few weeks. I started adding my fall decorations around the house the last week in August. Maybe for some it was too soon but not for me. They make me happy and as I was preparing to give the second book in my Food Blogger Mystery series a final read through I wanted to be happy. 🙂 The read through can be difficult because writers can tweak their manuscripts forever. So we look for things that make us happy and comfortable. For me, seeing a pumpkin decoration was a good thing.

Today I sent my manuscript to my agent. It’s a nerve-wracking day – sending your beloved manuscript out to the world. What I wouldn’t give for just another day to tweak. Oh, well, I don’t have another day. So I’m going to focus on something else. Like some Faves to share with you. Ready for some autumn inspiration?

Shelly from Calypso In The Country shares A Festive Fall Vignette on the Console Table with us. It’s lovely and has me wishing wehad a console table.

Angie from Angie The Freckled Rose shares a round-up of 15 Fantastic Fall Garden to Table Recipes. There are some great recipes to try and I’m particularly interested in the Whipped Cinnamon Pumpkin Butter recipe.

How about home tour? Ann from Sutton Place shares her home as a part of the Farmhouse Fall Home Tour. I love how just a few touches of the season warm up a room and create a welcoming space.

If you’re looking to get your craft on then you’ll want to check out the Easy DIY Fall Faux Floral from Jenny Marie Louise. Jenny shows us how to pull together the decoration in less than a half hour.

Some more decorating inspiration from Carol at The Red Painted Cottage. She a few tidbits from the fall home tour in A Few Sticky Pears and Other Details. I love the creamy white kitchen. And those pears! I want them.

I hope you enjoyed my Faves for this week. It’s nice to be able to take a quick break and visit some fun posts where you can pick up an idea or two.

Have a great day!

Coffee & Chat

Coffee & Chat #12 – Recipe for a Perfect Fall Weekend Outing?

Happy Monday!

It’s been awhile since our last Coffee & Chat. Over the summer I got caught up in writing and the work that accompanies writing. Writing is more than just sitting on a window seat waiting for inspiration to strike. 🙂 There’s a whole side business side to writing add to that the actual writing time, the time needed to spend outside gardening and everything else that needs to get done, there’s precious little time left for anything else. I’m hoping now that we’ve entered into fall and I’m back on a routine I’ll be able to continue our Coffee & Chats on a weekly basis. I have a full cup of coffee so lets get chatting.

A perfect fall weekend outing includes a few things:

A cool, sunny day. A day when I need to add a layer to ward off the chill but still need sunglasses because the sun is bright. I look forward to those beautiful days of fall. I love pulling on a flannel shirt or vest. I enjoy a day in the mid-60s where I can walk and walk and walk and not be weighed down by humidity.

There’s no timeline. We can take our time, not be rushed. We have the flexibility to veer off course, take a road we didn’t plan on and see where it leads. Don’t you just love when you come across a shop or a restaurant or a farm stand you weren’t expecting to find? Traveling without having to be somewhere by a certain time is freedom.

Being disconnected. Ditching electronic devices for anything other than taking photographs allows me to be in the moment. No emails. No texts. No calls. Whether it’s antiquing or hiking, being present right there and then is why I left the house, to experience something different.

Good company and good food. Both are essential for any outing. After all, who wants to go somewhere with someone who’s a grump and eat bad food?

Full tank of gas and a GPS. ‘Nuff said. 🙂

Weekend outings are fun, even if it’s just a trip to a local farm to find the perfect pumpkin. Getting out and enjoying the fall season in all it’ splendor is truly a gift. Nature puts on an amazing show for us to see so we shouldn’t be stuck inside and let it pass us by. Autumn is more than pumpkin spice everything.

I’m going to finish my coffee now. Please feel free to share what you need for a perfect fall weekend out.

Have a great day!

Baking, Quick Breads

Irish Soda Bread

A few days before St. Patrick’s day I was on the phone with a friend chatting about my pup’s recovery (he did amazing and fingers crossed for his next follow-up appointment) from a surgical procedure and she was interrupted by her husband who had a question. He wanted to know if I was baking Irish Soda Bread (he’s not Irish but he loves to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day since I moved in across the street). I said, “of course I am.” It’s one of my favorite breads and I bake it throughout the year, not just on the Wearin’ of the Green day. I was first introduced to Irish Soda bread by my uncle’s second wife. Born and bred in Ireland she moved to the United States in her twenties and kept along with her brogue her Irish traditions. Each year she bought Irish Soda bread from the nuns and that’s how I got introduced to the bread. Even though my family is Irish, no one ever baked Irish Soda bread. Go figure. Well, I set to correct that terrible error and I’ve been baking this bread for years.

I bake my bread on a pizza stone. I love the texture to the bread when it’s baked on the stone. There’s a lot of speculation of the meaning of the cross that is slashed into the dough prior to baking. There are some that say the cross wards off the devil, others say that it lets the fairies out and others who claim that it was an easy way to portion the bread. I select #2, letting the little Irish fairies out.  When you bake your loaf, you can decide. 🙂

The bread comes together quickly so it’s perfect for any meal.

Whenever I bake this bread I think fondly of my late Aunt Bridie. She was a tough old broad with a big heart. That’s the one awesome thing about cooking, even if you’re standing at the counter in your kitchen by yourself, you’re never alone because our recipes keep the spirits and hearts of our beloved ones with us.

If you haven’t tried baking Irish Soda bread before I hope you try this recipe. I’m sure you’ll love it. If you have baked this bread before, who’s recipe do you use? Is it one that has been handed down or did you get it from some place else?

What are quick breads?

They are breads made without yeast. Instead, baking powder or baking soda are used in place of yeast. This allows for the bread to be made quickly because there is no waiting for the dough to rise before baking.

Ingredients:

Flour – all-purpose works the best, I use King Arthur’s

Sugar – gives a little sweetness to the bread along with the raisins

Baking powder – leavening which makes the bread rise

Baking soda – leavening which makes the bread rise

Salt – tasty bread needs a pinch or two

Unsalted butter – gives the bread a scone-like texture

Raisins – optional and can be substituted for dried cranberries or caraway seeds, baker’s choice

Buttermilk – activates the baking soda

Egg – adds richness and density
